Research

Summary

My research interests focus on the chemistry and physics of surface processes including physical adsorption, chemisorption, surface reactions, and heterogeneous catalysis. The atomic structure and chemical reactivity of well-characterized surfaces are studied using ultrahigh vacuum surface-science methods. Present activities include studies of (1) the kinetics of reactions and catalytic processes over well-defined single-crystal surfaces, particularly the influence of ultrathin films of metals on metals on surface structure and reactivity; structure is determined at the atomic level using scanning tunneling microscopy; (2) the structures of surface molecules and surface reaction intermediates using electron stimulated desorption ion angular distributions (ESDIAD), including characterization of the electronic excitations that cause desorption; (3) the chemistry of single-crystal oxide surfaces and of the metal/oxide interface, particularly the role of surface defects in adsorption and reactivity. Our laboratory measurements are complemented by synchrotron radiation methods to probe surface electronic structure and to correlate with surface chemistry.
