SKBurley 2Stephen K. Burley, an internationally distinguished physicist and scientist, has joined the faculty of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology. In addition to his role with the Department of Chemistry, Professor Burley will serve as the new Director for the Center for Integrative Proteomics Research, with the vision to make it a center of excellence for interdisciplinary biological and biomedical research. Dr. Burley will use his years of academic and private-sector expertise to guide the Center for Integrative Proteomics Research and the Protein Data Bank through the transition phase as Rutgers merges with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.

Prior to joining Rutgers, Dr. Burley served as a Distinguished Lilly Research Scholar in the Lilly Research Laboratories. Before that, he was the chief scientific officer of SGX Pharmaceuticals, Inc., an oncology-focused drug discovery and development company located in San Diego, California. Prior to his work in the private-sector, Burley was the Richard M. and Isabel P. Furlaud professor and chief academic officer at The Rockefeller University, and a full investigator in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He has authored or coauthored more than 160 scholarly scientific articles. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and of the New York Academy of Sciences. Burley received an M.D. degree from Harvard Medical School in the joint Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology program and, as a Rhodes Scholar, received a D.Phil. in Molecular Biophysics from Oxford University.
